Hurricane Dorian Thursday, September 5, 2019

On Thursday, September 5, 2019 the eye of Hurricane Dorian stayed offshore near Charleston, SC as a Category 2 hurricane. Heavy winds and rain poured across the Lowcountry for most of the day leaving the Holy City with fallen trees, debris, and hundreds of thousands without electricity or internet… oh those poor children with no Fort Nite. Dorian had previously been a Category 5 Hurricane that pummeled the Bahamas and residents of Charleston County were fortunate.

A mandatory evacuation was issued on Sunday September 1 to go into effect Monday, September 2nd shutting down tourism, shipments of supplies into the Lowcountry, and closing down businesses for the week. Before, during, and after the storm we ventured out to get some photos of the effects Hurricane Dorian had in Charleston and Mt Pleasant.

Nature can be beautiful and destructive. I love hurricane season and all the rain. I love to run in the rain! My dream job when I was younger was to chase hurricanes with Jim Cantore. My son was born right after a tropical storm passed over our home…

My son was born right after a tropical storm passed over our home. This is my favorite time of year… and now we handle the maintenance for Pelican Properties rental homes following these beautiful natural disasters with the help of some great contractors. The good side is we usually get a break before and during the storm to prepare us for the aftermath.

Before the storm… The kids were so excited to have an entire week off from school due to Hurricane Dorian... Parents not so much. We put Riley to work making sandbags.

We had plenty of time in Mt Pleasant to prepare for Hurricane Dorian due to a premature evacuation. We measured and cut boards for this home in Snee Farm.

After being told at a hardware store we were not supposed to take sand from Sullivan’s Island beach we waited for an hour at Mt Pleasant Memorial Park for sand to be delivered… we had our own bags and we knew where to find sand. Hundreds of cars waited with no organization as to who was first come first serve. The town of Mt Pleasant was not given enough time to prepare… with hundreds of impatient Mt Pleasant residents waiting I have no idea how this didn’t make social media… upside we met a lot of nice neighbors.

After the town of Mt Pleasant had no sand at the park we used some common sense and went to Sullivan’s Island beach where there was plenty of sand… Sorry, not sorry.Sandbags are really really heavy. This was definitely a two person job and thank goo…

Sandbags are really really heavy. This was definitely a two person job and thank goodness we had a wagon.

It might have seemed like a fun idea to some to try to balance on this hammock without falling in the water… probably not the safest idea with all those pine trees nearby.
